8 Tips and Tricks to improve your Real Estate Photography

Real estate photography is a great way to make money on any market. However, a lot of photographers start out without knowing much about how to take great real estate photos. It is not the hardest thing in the world, however, it does require technical ability and an eye for the craft.

In this video, I share my most used techniques when it comes to Real Estate Photography. Real Estate Photography can be lots of fun and a great way to make a living money.

The Gear You Need

Here is the gear I recommend to get the best possible Real Estate Photos. You need a Full Frame Camera, a Wide Angle Lens, a Speed Light, a good Tripod. Keep in mind that most realtors will ask you for a full frame camera and a wide angle lens. I shot with the Nikon D800 and the Nikon 14-24mm to edit your images I recommend the best Real Estate Lightroom Presets out there.

Here are my favorite ways to take Real Estate Photos to a new level.

1.  Use a tripod. It’s important to bring a tripod to your next shoot. A lot of homes can be very dark and by having a tripod it will guarantee a clean sharp image every time.

2.  Use a flash. Having an on/off camera flash is a nice way to light up a room. This can help set the mood of a room by splashing a little light in a dark corner or a shadow.

3.  Move around. Do not stand in one place. Move around and find the best possible angle to get the best possible shot.

4.  Use a wide-angle lens. Rooms are often small, a wide angle lens can create the feel of a big space.

5.  Take your time. Do not rush the shots. Make sure you think about the composition and get the best possible shot.

6.  Edit your photos. Once you have a nice collection of images, take them to a computer and edit them. I recommend Adobe Lightroom.

7.  Use Lightroom Presets.  This speeds up your workflow and gets a consistent look on your images every time.  I recommend my Real Estate Lightroom Presets.

8.  Batch edit your images. This will speed up your process and guarantee a speedy delivery to the client.

How to take pictures of fireworks

Do you want to know how to take pictures of fireworks? With 4 July just around the corner I have put together some tips and tricks that will help you get that perfect shot this holiday weekend.

Fireworks can be lots of fun to photograph, but you have to know what you are doing and you have to be ready for the action.

1. Scout your location. Get to the place you are shooting early and make sure you walk around and look at all the angles. It’s always best to do this when there is no body around even a day before.

2. Use a tripod. When you figure out where you are shooting from set up your tripod. Make sure nobody will be in front of it and make sure you have plenty of room around you, this way no one will trip over it or bump into it.

3. Use a shutter release cable or the built-in timer in your camera. This is very important as it will prevent you from having blurry or out of focus photos.

4. Frame your shot. This is very important, you do not only want to shoot the fireworks but you want to tell a visual story. Make sure you include a landmark in your photos and make sure you are able to get all the fire works within your frame. You can test out a few different frames but make sure you are quick as the fireworks display can be over before you know it. Shoot wide.

5. Focus. This is a tricky one but it does not have to be complicated. What I always do is I focus on my land mark and make sure that there will be enough room in the frame to get the fireworks within my photo. This will guarantee that your land mark is in focus and that your fireworks come out crisp and fill the rest of your frame.

6. DO NOT USE FLASH. Make sure you turn off your flash, you want to create a nice long exposure effect and having your flash on will trick your camera into thinking it needs a short exposure. NO FLASH.

7. Shoot in Manual mode. Make sure you are in manual mode this way you have complete control of your camera. This will guarantee you get the exact results you are looking for.

8. ISO. Shoot at a low ISO try to keep it at 100. The fireworks put out so much light that this should not be a problem. This will assure you have a nice non-grainy photo.

9. Aperture. This is personal preference like with anything else, but if you are shooting a landmark and want everything in focus make sure you are at F9 and up (I always shoot at F11). This way you will have a nice sharp image and everything will be in focus.

10. Shutter speed. This is the most important setting. Creating a long exposure will assure you get the nice light tracers form the fireworks creating a dramatic and compelling photograph. You can experiment from 1 second to 30 seconds. A very safe number is about 8-15 seconds. If you put your camera on bulb mode you can use your remote trigger to experiment allowing you to get that perfect exposure.

Most important of them all is to experiment and have fun out there. Happy shooting!!!

How do I price my photography work? A Complete Guide

How do I price my photography work? This is the question I get asked the most. No matter who you are, if you are just starting out in photography, this can be a daunting question and a complicated topic to cover. However, it does not have to be difficult. In this video, I answer this question. This is exactly how I price my photography jobs and it works really well.

How do I price my photography work? A Step by Step Guide to Pricing Your Photography Work

1.  Have a set fee for your work. I have a minimum fee that I have set for my self and I will not show up to any job without at least making that “X” amount of money. Figure out what that is for you and stick to your guns. Sometimes you will need money and want to do any job for an incredibly small amount of money. However, it is important that you stick to your set fee.

2.  Hourly rate. Figure out how many hours a job is going to take you. Put a value on your time (come up with an hourly rate), and that’s how you come up with an estimate. You have to make sure you cover your time for proofing and editing images. Most people do not account for this and end up spending a lot of time editing and retouching.

3.  Ask the client for the budget. This is the technique I use the most. I always ask the client what their budget is, most will tell me some will not. If you get the answer and you are happy with that number then you can say yes and move forward with the project. If you do not like that number this is a place for you to start negotiations. Remember that everything is negotiable and there is room for every budget to go up or down. Be flexible and you will be ok.

Conclusion

In this video, I cover this topic in depth and show you how you can start making money without being the cheapest guy on the block.

If you need help editing your images, I use Lightroom Presets, give them a try.

Good luck out there, drop me a line below, I’d love to hear from you.

5 tips to Improve your photography right now without buying new gear

Do you want to improve your photography? One of the questions I get the most is how can I improve my photography?

Thre are many whats to improve your photography. I created this video in efforts to answer this common question and also to share with you what I do on a daily basis to improve my skills. It is not really rocketing science, all it takes its a bit of effort, and a desire to learn and master the craft.

In order to improve your photography, you need to understand one thing. Photography is about telling a compelling story, nothing more. If you think about it, all the great photos ever taken from the past, have been created with a camera that is older and not as technologically advanced as yours. Do you think Amsel Addams had a Nikon D850? Do not focus too much on the gear, focus on your story and how to tell it well.

My favorite is number one. Just leave the house. Go outside and get inspired. It is a lot harder to find inspiration inside your house. As soon as you step outside your house and get that breath of fresh air, everything changes.
