What is white balance and how to fix it

What is white balance? How do I fix it? In this video, I go in-depth on this topic. It sounds daunting, however, it is a lot simpler than you think.

As humans and artists, we tend to over complicate things. This is true for white balance, we do not understand it because we over think it. It is so simple if we just look at it for what it is. All this technology around us can make it confusing, but I am a believer in keeping things simple. If you look at white balance the simple way, all you need is your eyes to fix it.

What I am saying is that there is no right or wrong way to correct white balance, it’s all a matter of personal taste.

What is white balance? It is making whites look white in the image, as simple as that. Check out the video as I explain and go into detail on how to correct it in post.

Shooting the Miami Skyline

Just like any other night, yesterday I grabbed my camera and headed out the door. I was so happy to go skate around and also to catch a nice sunset. The night before the sunset was epic, full of color, it looked like a crayon box had melted in the sky.

I met up with my friend Luis Enrique, and the night did not disappoint. It was not colorful like the previous night, however, it was nice and moody, the wind was blowing giving the night a really cool mood. It felt like I was walking through an amusement park at night.

I also got to fly my Mavic Pro so the evening was just epic. Check out the video to watch behind the scenes. I shot this with my Nikon D800 and my Nikon 70-200 lens. (this lens is super sharp) I shot all this on my baby tripod, I love this thing, I’m telling you it comes in handy without having to carry around a big heavy one.

Best places to buy camera gear

A lot of people always ask me where I purchase my camera gear. I have 3 places I purchase all my gear from. Most of my cameras and lenses come from B&H and Adorama the reason being is that they do not sell gray market gear. The rest of my stuff including some lenses I get from Amazon. What is the gray market? The Gray market is when a dealer imports and sells unauthorized gear that was intended for another country’s camera market. The cheaper gear is legitimate, not counterfeit, but it’s unauthorized and it is not covered by the manufacturer’s warranty.

As a Nikon Pro, I have to make sure all my gear is from a reliable source. I trust all these places to deliver the right gear on time, and most importantly for a competitive price. If you are new to the photography game and need a place to get your gear from, you can not go wrong with these three stores. If you ever run into any issues, their customer service is on point.

If you want to rent camera gear before you purchase it, you can do so. I use Borrow Lenses, they are excellent when it comes to having everything in stock and the delivery is on time every time. They also have a massive selection where you can purchase used camera gear.

Drop me a line if you have any questions. You can check out all of My Gear by clicking this link.

How to find good light

We all want the best possible light to take great photos, however, sometimes it’s hard to find the right light.

It does not have to be that way. Good light is everywhere, you just have to figure out what you are looking for.  If you are new to photography know that the best times to shoot are at sunrise or sunset. During this times you will get the best light there is out there.

You have the nice soft golden light that makes everything look dreamy.

If you are out shooting in the middle of the day, you want to find shadows and cloud formations. At the same time, you want to find nice rays of light coming from the sun. Another thing to remember is that after a storm or rain comes really nice colors. The reflections throughout look beautiful and the light is nice and soft while the moist is in the air.

This photo is a great example. I shot this in the middle of the day at the Everglades. The light was a bit harsh but I saw a storm coming in the distance. I decided to wait for it, it never quite hit me but when it passed, it left this incredible cloud, full of color with a nice rainbow at the other end of it.  It was perfect, waiting around searching for a bit paid off.  If you are patient and look around you can find the right light during any time of day anywhere you are.

I shot this photo with my Nikon D800 using my favorite lens Nikon 24-85mm hand held from the back of my truck. Great times to be had out at the Everglades National Park.
